All Illegal Hostels Will Be Closed Down – Rent Commissioner Warns

Mr. Frederick Opoku, the Acting Rent Control Commissioner, has issued a caution to all hostel owners, hostel managers, and relevant stakeholders operating private hostels to review their prices, following concerns about student accommodation in various tertiary hostels.

Mr. Frederick speaking on Adomtv said the department’s visit to the private hostels across the country has revealed that the pricing is unacceptable.

He added that the condition of the hostels is worrying and poses health risks to the students living in them.

“The hostels in Ghana’s tertiary institutions, the rooms where the students sleep are very bad and not healthy” he said.

He further stated the fee for the students ranges from GHS 3,000 to GHS 8,000 per semester for a room that measures 14 by 16 feet describing the price as outrageous.

He stated that the main mandate of the Rent Control is to ensure that the excessive prices of hostels are kept moderate.

He stressed that most private hostels planning on increasing their fees will be stopped by the department.

“All hostels operating illegally will be closed down” he lamented.
