Rent Control Department Stops all Private Hostel Fee Increment for 2026/2027 Academic Year

The Rent Control Department has ordered all private hostel managers to halt hostel fee increment for the academic year 2026/2027 as the authorities have been moved by the growing concerns about the fee increments in the country.

According to the Rent Commissioner and the Rent Control Department, the persistent increase in hostel fees has become an economic burden to both parents and students, and if not addressed will hinder the academic performance of students who are pursuing higher education.

Due to that the Rent Commissioner together with the Rent Control Department has issued a directive to private hostel owners, facility managers, and all relevant stakeholders in the country to temporarily hold the increment in their fees on all or their intended proposed increment in hostel accommodation fees for the 2026/2027 academic year, for further discussion.

It was further stated that the hostel owners, facility managers, and all relevant stakeholders should meet and collectively deliberate on sustainable and fair measures regarding the hostel pricing to enhance the students’ well-being.
