Education Minister Directs GES Director to Allocate Slots for Persons with Disabilities

The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu has directed the Director General of the Ghana Education Service to allocate slots for persons with disabilities (PWDs).

He made this statement during a visit to Sefwi Wiaso to motivate those who are preparing to undertake their Basic Education Certificate (BECE).

According to the Minister, these inclusions stem from equal opportunity within the sector to ensure persons with disabilities can take part in the teaching field to impact knowledge.

“So, Director-General, you are accordingly directed that you must allocate a certain percentage of your recruitment to teachers with disability in your cohort”, he said.

He added that more productivity is required in the field as inclusion of PWD can enhance the effort needed and also ensure equal knowledge to the impacted.

On the issue of the unpaid teacher allowance he said, the problem would be sent to the Finance department for deliberation on it for their monies to be released.

“The other, I would have to take it up with the Honourable Minister for Finance. It’s about outstanding car maintenance allowance, transfer allowance, and promotion allowance. We’ll see what we do about it”, he said.

The sector seeks to have an inclusive recruitment process and also solve all the challenges faced in the sector.
